Three ways into Lyngen

The Lyngen peninsula lies between the Ullsfjord and Sørfjord on the west side and the Lyngenfjord and Storfjord on the east. From Tromsø you cross to it by ferry, or you drive around it. The ferries are not a tourist boat: they are public car ferries on two lines, run by the operator Norled, and they follow a timetable valid from 1 January 2026.

Which route is best depends on where you are going. For Lyngseidet, the main village on the peninsula, you can use any of the three. Start at the home page if you are still choosing a base. For flights and Tromsø itself, see the page on Tromsø airport. For a longer drive through the north, northern Norway road trips covers the wider region.

The routes compared

Time figures come from a regional operator and do not include waiting at the quay.

RouteHow it worksTime
Via Fagernes and BreivikeidetFerry 191 to Svensby, then on to Lyngseidet by road20 minutes on the ferry, about 30 minutes by car from Svensby to Lyngseidet
Ferry-free via OterenDrive over the peninsula on road 868–
Via Olderdalen on the E6Ferry 190 across to Lyngseidet40 minutes on the ferry

For the whole trip, one lodge description gives about two hours from Tromsø to Lyngseidet, while a regional page says 90 minutes for Lyngen in general. The two use different destinations, so do not mix them. Crossing times also differ between sources by a few minutes. Plan for waiting at the ferry.

Using the ferries

What the 2026 timetable and rules say.

Sample departures

In the October period, the timetable lists departures at 10:05 from Breivikeidet, 10:30 from Svensby, 12:35 from Lyngseidet and 13:25 from Olderdalen, on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. These are examples, not the full list, and they say nothing about free space.

Summer and holidays

Some departures run only in summer, from 1 June to 7 September 2026 or 8 June to 17 August 2026, so skip those in autumn. There is no service on 25 December 2026, and Christmas and New Year have special times. The timetable can change at short notice.

No car reservation

Private cars cannot reserve a place. The space guarantee for fast boats, in force since 1 February 2026, does not apply to car ferries. Coaches are the exception: one coach per departure can be booked on each line.

Check the space

Since June 2026 the operator's real-time map shows the expected free space on departures, including both Lyngen lines. It is a guide only and can be wrong.

Ferry fares in 2026

One way, including VAT, valid from 1 January 2026. Older fare tables no longer apply.

Vehicle or travelerLine 191 Breivikeidet to SvensbyLine 190 Lyngseidet to Olderdalen
People and bicyclesNOK 0NOK 0
Car up to 6.0 m, regular fareNOK 104NOK 152
Car up to 6.0 m with AutoPASS transponder (10% off)NOK 94NOK 137
Electric or hydrogen car up to 6.0 mNOK 73NOK 106
Vehicle 6.01 to 8.0 m, regular fareNOK 231NOK 331

Vehicles are priced by total length, including cargo and trailer. A foreign-registered car needs FerryPay or an AutoPASS agreement according to the operator's English fare sheets. If you pay by card on the spot, the sheets charge the fossil or hybrid fare, so do not count on the electric rate. Your rental company may add handling fees that the fare does not include.

Buses, parking and entry

Public transport exists, but it is thin.

Bus lines

The 2026 list shows line 150 (Tromsø, Lyngseidet, Storslett, Alta), line 460 (Nordkjosbotn, Oteren, Lyngseidet) and line 465 (Lyngseidet, Lenangen, Russelv), for 17 August to 31 December 2026. Do not assume a daily bus to every trailhead. Check the departures and fares with the operator.

Parking at trailheads

Municipal nature car parks charge NOK 50 for the first hour, then NOK 30 per hour, up to NOK 250 per day in 2026, unchanged from 2025. The municipality also sells a 12-month payment of NOK 300 for its EasyPark car parks, tied to your license plate. Payment apps add their own fees.

Entry and money

Germany's foreign office says German citizens need a passport or ID valid for the whole stay and no visa. Norway has taken part in the EU entry system at its outer Schengen border since 10 April 2026, with exemptions for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens. Rules differ by nationality, so check yours. The currency is the Norwegian krone, and cards are widely accepted.
