Where to Stay in Lyngen

Lyngen has few villages and the lodging is spread out, so the place you pick shapes your days. This guide goes by village, with the examples operators publish and the details to confirm before you book.

Choosing a base on the peninsula

The Lyngen mountain range is about 80 km (50 miles) long, and the peninsula is at most 15 km (9 miles) wide. Lodging is not clustered in one town. You pick a village, and the village decides how far you are from the ferries, the trailheads and the fjord. This guide names the places and the operators that publish their own details, and it is not a ranking or a booking page.

Lyngseidet is the hub: the main village, with the ferry to Olderdalen and a main bus stop. Svensby is where the ferry from Breivikeidet lands. Koppangen and Nord-Lenangen are covered below. How you reach each one is on the getting there page. If you would rather sleep in the city and visit Lyngen on a day trip, see where to stay in Tromsø.

Svensby sits on the Ullsfjord, not on the open Lyngenfjord, so do not expect the eastern shore from there.

Which place for which plan

Start from what you want to do each day.

Ski touring

Lyngen Experience offers guided ski tours with a lodge or apartment stay in Nord-Lenangen. It describes three to five tours, in groups usually of four to six people, with the price on request. Magic Mountain Lodge says it does not rent ski gear and points to a rental in Lyngseidet, so confirm availability there.

Hiking

The Blåisvatnet trail starts at the car park in Sør-Lenangsbotn. Steindalen is reached from road 868 between Oteren and Lyngseidet. Pick a base on the side of the peninsula where you will hike most.

Northern lights

Look for an open view north and little artificial light, then check the cloud forecast. No lodge location guarantees a sighting.

Boat trips

Lyngen Experience starts its boat activities from the harbor of Nord-Lenangen and takes outside guests too, with up to 12 guests plus crew on its Targa boat. Svensby Tursenter advertises boat rental from 15 May to 30 August.

Prices, meals and what to ask

Published rates are patchy. The Svensby cabin page lists a base rate of NOK 1,750 per night for a 55 m² cabin with two bedrooms and five beds, and NOK 1,250 per night for a 25 m² cabin with one bedroom, with a discount from two nights at no stated rate. Treat these as starting points and confirm the current price when you book. Koppangen publishes no fixed nightly rate.

Meals need a question. Magic Mountain Lodge describes half board on one page and full board with a packed lunch on another for the ski touring season, so ask which applies. Its restaurant is closed between seasons, and summer dinner is only by arrangement for groups. A guest kitchen or self-catering cabin is useful here. As a national yardstick, a budget restaurant meal in Norway runs roughly NOK 190 to 350 and a cappuccino NOK 35 to 65, though local prices are not confirmed.

No general child or senior discounts, online fees or minimum stays are known for these places, so ask each host. One operator lists a project called Ocean Suites as coming soon, with no confirmed opening date, so do not plan around it.

Camping and the right to roam

Norway's right to roam lets you walk and ski in unbuilt country, but it gives no claim to free parking, huts or guided services. Tents must stand at least 150 m from inhabited houses or cabins, and the usual stay is up to two nights in one spot. Cultivated land needs the owner's permission. Fires are restricted from 15 April to 15 September, and local bans can apply. Drones are not allowed in the protected landscape area. Svensby Tursenter also has a camping area with a service building.

Plan your arrival too. Ferry times can change at short notice, and roads in Lyngen were closed by avalanche danger in winter 2025/26, so check the crossings on the getting there page before a late check-in. For lodging elsewhere in the north, see northern Norway.

Where to stay in Lyngen: frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to stay in Lyngen?

It depends on your plan. Lyngseidet is the main village, with the ferry to Olderdalen. Svensby suits arrival from Breivikeidet. Nord-Lenangen suits ski touring and boat trips from Lyngen Experience.

Can I stay in Tromsø and visit Lyngen?

Yes, as a day trip, but the drive includes a ferry. One lodge description gives about two hours to Lyngseidet. A base on the peninsula saves driving.

What check-in times apply?

The Svensby cabin booking page lists check-in from 15:00 and check-out by 11:00. Other places may differ, so ask the host.

Is breakfast or dinner included?

It depends on the place. Magic Mountain Lodge describes board in the ski season differently on two pages, and its restaurant closes between seasons. Ask for the meal terms in writing before you pay.

Can I camp in the Lyngen Alps?

Yes, within the right to roam: at least 150 m from houses and cabins, normally up to two nights in one place, and not on cultivated land without permission. Fire restrictions apply from 15 April to 15 September.
